One of the most prominent and highly talked about theory on aging is the free radicals aging theory. So what is free radicals? Sounds a lot like a rock band or an anarchist movement. But this one is different, free radicals aging theory is something proposed by Dr. Denham Harman back in ‘54 and holds the key (as stated by many scientists) not only for our aging process but also development of diseases in our body.
Essentially, free radicals are atoms that have lack of electrons and are unstable. Stable atoms are stable, hence the name. But unstable atoms seek to fill their electron gap, and they do so by stealing the electron of another atom. So what does this have to do with our body?
Our body consists of billions of cells, each comprised of molecules. Molecules are formed from many atoms. So this is the connection. Free radicals steals electron from the atoms that makes out our cell. Problem is, if an atom’s electron is stolen, it’s no longer a stable atom. It becomes a free radical too. So this impacts our biological cells and can damage the cells.
Free radicals caused by oxidation. A good example of oxidation is when you cut an apple, and leave it outside. They bruised, and turn brown. This is the process of oxidation, the cellular level of the apple is destroyed by free radicals. Regarding our body, this happens when we put air inside our body by breathing. Normally, there should be some number of free radicals of our body. A number that can be maintained. The fact is free radicals that usually are found inside our body can be useful in our daily life. They participate in the metabolism of normal reactions in the body. But what happens when their number is increased?
Ideally, if we live in a world without pollution with healthy food, free radicals wouldn’t have jump from their nornal level. Unfortunately, that’s not the world that we now live in. Pollution, unhealthy food, food toxins and all that can bring out the worst of us. So this is what free radicals can do.
Scientist have noticed that as you age, the body capacity to handle free radicals lowers. So free radicals are also linked to our aging process. This is not necessarily be bad news, because this also means,that we can delay the process considerably if we took steps to prohibit the formation of free radicals in our body.
So how do you stop free radicals? Did you notice that there are something called antioxidants? So what are they? They are substances that can spare electrons to prevent free radicals to form. They can do this unique thing because of their properties. I will post more about antioxidants in other posts, but this is one of the key things to do to deal with free radicals.
Problem is, processed food in our civilized life contains little antioxidants. And face it, our daily diet doesn’t reflect healthiness. So what can we do about it? We can change our diet or can have a supplement that is high in antioxidant value.
Aging is inevitable in our life. But who said that aging means suffering? Controlling free radicals with antioxidants in a way ’slows’ our aging process. Other benefits that it also affect the diseases related with free radicals. So why wait?
